Listwa Kannaval is marking its second year as a key event during the Saint Lucian Carnival, giving people a place to reflect, talk and explore culture together.
The event will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at The Harbor Club. This year’s theme is “Rhythm, Language, and Identity: Does Our Music Define Us?”
The discussion will examine how Saint Lucian music shapes national identity, tracing its journey from traditional folk and calypso to soca and the Dennery segment unique to Saint Lucia.
“Particular attention will be given to the role of Kwéyòl in musical expression and the ways in which music functions as a vehicle for storytelling that further leads to cultural preservation,” says the Carnival Planning and Management Committee.
Saint Lucian scholar Dr Ronald T. Francis, who teaches linguistics at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, will give the main presentation. Francis has a PhD in linguistics and focuses on Atlantic Creoles, applied and corpus linguistics, and world Englishes.
His research examines social justice, discrimination and cultural attitudes, especially in Saint Lucian popular music.
After the lecture, a panel of artists, producers, cultural workers and industry leaders will discuss the theme further. There will also be a chance for the audience to join in and share ideas.
“As Carnival continues to evolve, Listwa Kannaval provides an important space to ask deeper questions about Saint Lucia’s cultural identity,” the organisers said. “It affirms that Carnival is not only something to be celebrated, but also something to be studied, documented and thoroughly understood.”
