La Clery, who have won the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League two years in a row, are heading to Trinidad & Tobago for the Caribbean Football Union Club Shield. This is the region’s second-tier club tournament, and La Clery will take part in its eighth edition, kicking off the same weekend as Saint Lucia Carnival on July 23.
La Clery will face Roaring Lions from Anguilla in the first round. If they win, they will face the Surinamese champions, SV Robinhood, in the Round of 16.
Last year, the tournament had a group stage. La Clery finished third after playing only two of the four other teams in their group. They drew 1-1 with Real Rincon from Bonaire and got three points when Haiti’s AS Capoise did not show up.
Based on the competition regulations and club ranking criteria, five clubs from the Caribbean’s fully professional leagues, along with the three highest-ranked amateur clubs, received byes to the Round of 16.
The CFU Shield is also a qualifier for this year’s Concacaf Caribbean Cup. The winner and runner-up will move on to the Confederation’s 10-club tournament, bringing them a step closer to the Concacaf Champions Cup. So far, no team from Saint Lucia has reached that stage.
