MIRI (April 25): The dredging and deepening works for the Kuala Baram Delta access channel, aimed at developing a seaport in Miri, are now 70 per cent complete, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at a dinner with local leaders and community chiefs (KMKK) on Friday, Abang Johari said that although the project involves high costs, it is necessary for Miri’s economic development.
He explained that deepening works at the Baram river mouth have been challenging due to sedimentation and unpredictable tidal conditions.
According to him, advancements in technology and science have enabled dredging works to be shifted offshore.
“To build a proper port, we are constructing it at sea so it will not be affected by tidal changes at Kuala Baram. It does involve high costs.
“Ultimately, about four years ago, we decided to proceed with building the Miri port offshore.
“Tomorrow (Saturday), I will visit the project site. To date, approximately 70 per cent of the offshore works have been completed,” he said.
The project, reportedly valued at RM208.9 million, involves the construction of breakwaters, dredging, as well as marine infrastructure, and is scheduled for completion in March next year.
He added that once completed, the port is expected to attract large vessels, including cruise ships, to dock in Miri and visit its various attractions.
Abang Johari noted that Miri has a strategic location to be promoted as a cruise stopover hub.
Among the targets are cruise ships from Singapore, which could bring a significant number of tourists to the city.
For Miri, he said the state government also plans to develop the Beraya area, located between Miri and Niah, near the Unesco World Heritage Site, Niah National Park.
