The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said that the expansion of the European Union remains a common goal and that the future of Macedonia is in the European family.
At the joint press conference with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Košta welcomed the Government’s efforts in implementing reforms, especially the progress in the rule of law and the reform of public administration.
– Your Government has shown commitment. I welcome the progress in the reform agenda and full alignment with the common foreign and security policy of the European Union. It sends a strong signal about the strategic orientation of North Macedonia and about the values we share – said Kosta.
However, he emphasized that the adoption of the agreed constitutional amendments remains the only way to formally open accession negotiations with the EU.
– It is the only way to unlock the full benefits of membership for the citizens of North Macedonia. Progress towards European integration requires a constructive dialogue with the neighbors and steps to build trust – said Kosta.
Prime Minister Mickoski reiterated that the country remains firmly determined towards the European path, but asked for a process that would be credible, predictable and based on merit.
– We are not looking for privileges, nor simplified rules. We are looking for principles and a process in which reforms, work and fulfilled obligations will be truly valued – said Mickoski.
He pointed out that the Government continues with reforms, economic stabilization, attracting investments and improving public services, but warned that there is a feeling of uncertainty among citizens after many years of compromises and delays in the European integration process.
At the meeting, issues related to economic integration, infrastructural connection, energy security, investments and opportunities for young generations were discussed.
Kosta’s visit is part of his regional tour through the Western Balkans ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will be held on June 5 in Tivat.
