“Mom, my heart hurts.”
So the 12-year-old girl tried to explain to her mother what she herself did not understand. She wasn’t thinking about the heart beating in her chest. She talked about the pain that was eating her up from the inside, about the feeling of hopelessness, anxiety and hunger that was gradually taking over her life.
Ten years later her mother Maja Krčelić he still remembers every detail.
She remembers hospital rooms, emergency admissions, moments when doctors saved her daughter’s life. She remembers the days when the little girl locked herself in her room, refused company, friends and family. She remembers suicidal thoughts and self-harm, which often come bundled with anorexia.
