A diplomat with knowledge of Sunday’s meeting between US and Iranian representatives in Switzerland told CNN that an emergency meeting on Lebanon has been added to the talks and will be the first issue the sides address.
Before leaving for Switzerland, US Vice President JD Vance said one of the priorities is to make progress on the ceasefire in Lebanon, which has again come under heavy Israeli airstrikes. This senior American official arrived in Switzerland on Sunday morning.
The cessation of hostilities in Lebanon is a condition for the start of 60 days of negotiations between the United States and Iran to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and other complex issues.
An Iranian official told CNN on Saturday that ending the conflict in Lebanon is “the most important issue on the agenda” of the Iranian delegation that has gone to Switzerland for talks with the United States.
The official said the talks are not part of the official talks contained in the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, as other provisions, particularly Article 1 of the agreement, which includes an end to the war in Lebanon, have not yet been implemented.
The spokesman of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baqaei, also stated on Saturday that the Iranian delegation will travel to Switzerland to follow up and demand the implementation of the obligations of the other party, and said: Commitment is for commitment and if the other party refuses to fulfill its obligations, Tehran will take the necessary measures in return.
“Every understanding and agreement is tested when it is time to implement it. According to the experience we have of the other party’s bad faith, we must make strong and serious demands at the time of implementation. This trip is a trip to demand the fulfillment of the obligations of the other party.
On Saturday morning, Speaker of the Islamic Council of Iran Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Switzerland for talks with American officials.
