Further investigations into possible health consequences are ongoing, and intentional serious bodily harm is also being investigated.
There were 15 micrograms of rat poison in the manipulated jar of Hipp baby food that was seized last Saturday in Schützen am Gebirge (Eisenstadt-surroundings district). The Eisenstadt public prosecutor’s office announced this on Friday. A further toxicological assessment should now clarify what effects consumption would have had. In addition to intentionally endangering the public, investigations are also underway for attempted intentional grievous bodily harm.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the health consequences of the dose for a child’s body are still being examined in detail – including whether it could have been fatal. Results are not expected until the end of next week at the earliest. What type of rat poison it was was not disclosed for tactical reasons.
Meanwhile, the Burgenland police are continuing to search for the second suspected tampered glass, which is said to have been sold in the same Spar branch in Eisenstadt. This has not yet come up, although families with small children from the area have recently been targeted.
The German authorities are investigating the case on suspicion of attempted extortion of the baby food manufacturer. In Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, a total of five tampered baby food jars have so far been confiscated before consumption. The recall of Hipp products at Spar became public on Saturday night. There were specific references to the Hipp article “Vegetable jar carrot with potato” 190 grams. As a precaution, other supermarkets also removed the product from sale. (APA)
