In Guayaquilthe medical conditions derived from enduring high temperatures begin to emerge. He heatstrokeIn addition to dermatological conditions, it is one of the medical emergencies that can arise, especially in the context that the city has endured temperatures higher than 32 degrees in recent days.
Only during the weekend, the Main Port recorded its hottest days so far in April and with a sensation thermal close to the 40 degrees.
In this scenario, doctors explain that heat stroke can occur because the body can lose its ability to self-regulate temperature and the body cannot cool down properly.
Some patients may register body temperature higher than 40 degrees. Among the main warning signs are the confusion, disorientation, fainting and even seizures.
The doctor Carlos Salvadormedical director of Semedic hospitalexplained that other symptoms of heat stroke include very hot skin, which may be dry or with fine perspiration, accelerated pulse, increased respiratory rate, headache, nausea and dizziness.
“It is important to differentiate it from fever, since in heat stroke no medications should be administered such as paracetamol, because the problem is not infectious but rather thermal regulation,” he indicated.
Given these conditions, the main recommendation is not to self-medicate and seek immediate medical attention.
Salvador stressed that high temperatures and high thermal sensation increase the risk of these conditions, especially when people remain exposed to the sun for prolonged periods or perform intense physical activities in hotter hours.
Prevention of heat stroke
Among the preventive measures, it is recommended avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated constantly—even without feeling thirsty—wear light, light-colored clothing, as well as hats or caps.
It is also advisable to take breaks in cool, ventilated or air-conditioned places and avoid physical activity such as run or high-impact sports during the hours with the highest temperature, which is usually between 10:00 and 16:00.
Salvador indicated that the sudden temperature changesthis is going from air-conditioned environments to outside heat. For this reason, he warned that carrying out these practices can cause discomfort, so it is recommended to avoid them or do them progressively.
The doctor reiterated that it is necessary avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinkssince they promote dehydration. Instead, it is recommended to drink water or hydrating drinks.
Drinks must be consumed cool, not extremely coldto avoid sudden temperature variations.
“Heat stroke can affect people of any age, although the risk is greater in older adults, children and people with pre-existing conditions”Salvador quoted.
Specific recommendations for babies and children
In the case of babies and children, the pediatrician Mabel Valverde indicated that the recommendations are similar to those for adults, but with certain changes. For example, it is recommended to place light, light-colored clothing. Likewise, keep them in cool spaces and avoid exposure between 10:00 and 16:00.
In recent days, indicated the doctorthere have been cases of babies or infants with rashes due to high temperatures.
Valverde specified that, in addition, they must be placed sunscreenbecause there are already options on the market that are not toxic for babies. The product should be placed 15 minutes before being exposed to the sun.
“Always respecting the areas of the hands, feet, mouth and eyes so that it does not cause any discomfort,” he indicated.
The pediatrician expressed that with these indications we avoid reaching symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion, cramps, and heat strokewhich can become in factors of a medical emergency.
Specialists insist that if a person presents symptoms such as tachycardia, rapid breathing, headache or alterations in the state of consciousness, it should be considered a medical emergency and go immediately to a health center. (YO)
