The 4th General Assembly of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), hosted in Monaco from April 20 to 23, 2026, has now concluded, marking the end of four days of high-level discussions on the future of hydrography and ocean governance…
Opened by HSH Prince Albert II, the Assembly brought together nearly 80 member states, reaffirming Monaco’s historic role as host of the organisation for over a century. Held in a rapidly evolving global context, the discussions focused on the digital transformation of maritime data, including the growing role of artificial intelligence in navigation and mapping, as well as the impact of geopolitical tensions on the world’s seas. A key outcome was the confirmation of a new secretariat dedicated to the GEBCO project, which will be based in Monaco within the IHO headquarters.
Participants praised the Principality for its continued material and financial support, as well as its longstanding commitment to ocean science and international cooperation since the era of Prince Albert I. Alongside the Assembly, an exhibition at the Rainier III Auditorium showcased cutting-edge hydrographic technologies, including marine drones demonstrated from the Yacht Club marina.
The Assembly also saw the election of a new Secretary General, Italian Rear Admiral Luigi Sinapi, alongside New Zealand’s Adam Greenland as Director, setting the course for the organisation’s next chapter.
