KUCHING (April 15): Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will announce assistance measures for Sarawakians this Thursday in response to rising global uncertainties, particularly in the energy sector.
He said the announcement would outline initiatives by the Sarawak government aimed at cushioning the impact of increasing costs on the people.
“I am expected to make a further announcement this Thursday,” he said during Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad’s (BPHB) 30th anniversary dinner here on Tuesday.
He noted that the move comes amid growing concerns over global energy supply disruptions, including tensions in the Middle East, which could drive up energy prices and exert broader economic pressures.
Abang Johari said rising energy costs would have a cascading effect on the global economy, impacting transportation, food prices, manufacturing and, ultimately, the cost of living.
“No country is immune to these pressures. From developed nations to emerging economies, all will feel the strain,” he said.
He stressed that the Sarawak government remains committed to ensuring the state’s resources translate into tangible support for the people, especially vulnerable groups.
“This includes targeted assistance, infrastructure development, and economic programmes aimed at maintaining affordability and improving quality of life,” he said.
At the same time, he said Sarawak would continue to strengthen its economic resilience through strategic initiatives such as the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and the transition towards renewable and cleaner energy.
He added that efforts to drive industrial growth, job creation and income opportunities would remain a priority to ensure Sarawakians are not only protected from global shocks but also empowered to thrive.
Among those present were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who is also BPHB chairman.
