Stevia is generally planted in the spring months (April-May). The plant, which is planted after the risk of frost has disappeared, loves warm and sunny environments. Harvesting is mostly done in late summer and early autumn.
In Türkiye, especially the Aegean, Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia regions are considered suitable for stevia cultivation. Since it likes the temperate climate, more efficient results can be obtained in these regions. It is also stated that production can be made in some regions of Central Anatolia with controlled irrigation.
One of the most striking aspects of the plant is its earning potential. The dried form of stevia leaves can be purchased for approximately 750 TL to 1,750 TL per kilo, depending on the quality. For processed products, this figure can go much higher.
According to experts, stevia is rapidly spreading as an alternative in the food industry, thanks to its hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Its wide range of uses, from diet products to beverages, plays an important role in increasing demand.
However, as in every agricultural activity, planning is of great importance in this field. It is emphasized that production should not be started without doing soil structure, irrigation facilities and market research.
