GRONINGEN — The paving of the Gangaram Pandayweg is in full swing. The Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO) reported on Monday (today) that the work is in the final phase. “The work depends on the weather conditions, so an exact completion date cannot be determined,” the department says.
The Gangaram Pandayweg in the Saramacca district is a busy route, partly due to industrial activities, including those of Staatsolie. Ultimately, the road must be sustainably improved and made resistant to intensive use and weather influences.

In phase one, a 5.4 kilometer stretch will be tackled. Culverts have been placed at approximately five locations, while wooden sheet piles have been installed at three locations to strengthen the road structure. “In addition, the road has been widened in narrow sections to improve road safety and traffic flow. A correction layer of clinking sand has also been applied, followed by raising the height, profiling and leveling the base course-low,” the ministry reports.
Work is currently underway to level and compact the stabilized road layer with graders. An innovative stabilization method based on Stabical is used for the hardening. This technique differs from traditional asphalt constructions in that the subsurface is stabilized into a structure that is comparable to concrete. Previous pilot projects using this method have produced positive results.
According to OWRO, the integrated approach has proven to be necessary, “as the road was in a very poor condition, especially during the rainy period”. The work is carried out by Iroads and is led by Jacques Gajadin.
Society is asked to take the new road conditions into account. Road users are urged to moderate their speed, while heavy freight traffic is requested to strictly adhere to the permitted axle loads, so that the sustainability of the road is guaranteed.
