PARAMARIBO – “His absence cuts deeply. But his legacy will continue to carry us. Strength to his family, his friends and all who were dear to him. We continue because he expected it of us. Suriname has not only lost a man, but a son who served his country until the last moment.” This is how VHP faction leader Asiskumar Gajadien concluded his speech on Thursday during the mourning session of parliament in connection with the passing of DNA member and former president Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
Gajadien described Santokhi as a statesman who dedicated his life to the service of his country and people. On behalf of the VHP, he expressed his gratitude for the broad condolences from the various factions and the government. According to him, this shows the respect that Santokhi enjoyed, across political and social boundaries. According to him, the presence of the family during the mourning session gave extra meaning to the moment, because it made visible how much Santokhi has meant to Suriname and its institutions.
In his speech, Gajadien reflected on the dedication and discipline of Santokhi, who, according to him, was almost never unprepared and devoted himself fully to his parliamentary work. He cited a personal conversation in which Santokhi indicated upon his recent accession to the National Assembly that he would not stay long. What was taken lightly at the time later takes on a deeper and tragic meaning.
The faction leader spoke of a palpable void within parliament. He referred to the lack of short attunements, the looks of understanding and the moments when Santokhi managed to create clarity in complex situations with a few words. At the same time, he emphasized that Santokhi’s ideas, beliefs and work ethic will live on.
According to Gajadien, Santokhi leaves behind more than just memories. His legacy is a mandate to current and future generations to continue the work with the same dedication and sense of responsibility. In particular, he pointed out to young people the exemplary role of Santokhi’s discipline and commitment.
He concluded with words of condolence to the family and loved ones. “Suriname has not only lost a person, but a son who served his country until the last moment,” said Gajadien.
