alaysian authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the alleged abuse of three Indonesian domestic workers after a video purportedly showing the mistreatment went viral online.
The suspects, identified as two sisters and their husbands aged between 30 and 34, were detained at a residence in Taman Johor near Tampoi, Johor Bahru, at around 7:30 p.m. on June 13, local police said.
According to Erry Kananga, Acting Head of Information, Social and Cultural Affairs at the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Johor Bahru, the arrests were made after the consulate lodged an official police report regarding the alleged abuse.
“KJRI officials and legal representatives accompanied the victims while they gave statements to Malaysian police investigators. Legal proceedings in the case are currently underway,” Erry said in a statement on Thursday.
The three victims, identified only by their initials YA, YY and SH, were allegedly abused at two separate locations in Johor.
YA was reportedly subjected to abuse in the Tampoi area, while YY and SH were allegedly abused in Taman Daya. The incidents fell under different police jurisdictions, requiring separate reports to be filed.
“YA’s case is being handled by the Johor Bahru North District Police Headquarters, while the cases involving YY and SH are being investigated by the Johor Bahru South District Police Headquarters,” Erry said.
