Cape Verde continues to make headlines at the World Cup. A third consecutive draw has secured the team a place in the Round of 32, where they will face the reigning world champions – an achievement that was celebrated into the early hours by many Cape Verdeans in Luxembourg, particularly in Foetz.
The fairy-tale run continues: Cape Verde has achieved the historic milestone of reaching the knockout phase of the World Cup. The achievement was celebrated by Cape Verdean supporters in Luxembourg on Friday night, with an estimated 350 to 400 fans gathering for a public screening in Foetz. Kick-off took place at 2am local time, in the night from Friday to Saturday, and the final jubilation was immense.
The 0-0 draw secured on Friday night in Houston against Saudi Arabia marked Cape Verde’s third draw of the tournament. The debutants had previously surprised observers with draws against Spain (0-0) and Uruguay (2-2) during the group stage. With Spain defeating Uruguay 1-0 in the evening’s other fixture, Cape Verde finished second in Group H to seal their progression, eliminating both Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the process.
Cape Verde will now face Argentina, the reigning world champions, on the night of 4 July at midnight.
