The number of foreign companies setting up shop in the greater Amsterdam area fell again last year to 39, according to official city figures.
In 2024, 49 new firms established their operations in the capital – a major drop from 2019, when 161 international companies came to Amsterdam.
City economics chief Sofyan Mbarki said the decline is due to the shortage of capacity on the electricity grid, the tight jobs market and the lack of housing.
In addition, the city has reduced the scope of its investment drive since 2022, focusing on tech firms, medical companies, sustainable construction, textiles, mobility and food. In total, 31 of last year’s new firms fall into one of those categories.
The biggest new arrival is Taiwanese company Delta Electronics, which has established its European headquarters in Hoofddorp.
