The vice president of the Republic, Pedro Alliana, confirmed yesterday that he accepted the proposal to lead the presidential team of Honor Colorado (HC) for the 2028 general elections. Unofficial information has been around in the Chartist tent since mid-2024.
Alliana revealed that last Friday she confirmed the leader of the movement, the former president and current head of the National Republican Association (ANR), Horacio Carteswho accepted the nomination for the position of President of the Republic. He said that Cartes suggested that he should choose his teammate. The former president is in the full stage of recovery after heart surgery, which occurred at the end of February.
Alliana said that the vice presidential candidate has to have the technical profile. He did not spare qualifications for Minister of Industry and Commerce, Marcos Riquelme, businessman and grandson of the remembered Blas N. Riquelme, former head of the ANR and former senator. He called him a minister “deluxe” and that has a “wonderful profile”.
The “political” profiles who aspire to the position of vice president for Honor Colorado are the senator with permission and current Minister of Urban Planning, Housing and Habitat, Juan Carlos Baruja; the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raul Latorre; and the governor of Guaira, César Luis “Cesarito” Sosa.

Confirmation against friction
Several important actors close to Cartes, coinciding with his convalescence, harshly questioned Santiago Peña’s administration last week, especially the management of the economy. Even the Paraguayan ambassador to the United States, Gustavo Leitetalked about “smell of bribery”statements that caused a scandal that the government (call for attention from the Foreign Ministry) only reprimanded him and until now has not investigated the complaint.
In this delicate atmosphere of tension, and less than two months before the June municipal elections, Alliana announced that she accepted the presidential candidacy. This possibility has been discussed since 2024, even at HC rallies.
Intense meetings
After the confirmation of Alliana, yesterday in Mburuvicha Róga, President Santiago Peña received the senators Silvio “Beto” Ovelar and Natalicio Chase (bank leader). The meeting, according to Peña’s post, was “to coordinate our work priorities and align actions that positively impact the lives of Paraguayans.”
Today, Vice President Pedro Alliana received several delegations. Among others, he received the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, who aspires to run for the Vice Presidency.
The second of the Executive Branch posted on networks that it was “a pleasure to receive the visit of my friend, Congressman Raúl Latorre.” “It is always productive and gratifying to talk with the president of the Chamber of Deputies,” wrote.
Alliana also talked about progress of road works in Chaco. He received the deputy in audience Francisco Petersen (ANR-HC)to the president of the Chortitzer Cooperative, Ronald Reimerand the mayor of Loma Plata, Ernest Giesbrecht. The visitors thanked “the president’s efforts that made possible the advancement of the asphalt and paving works in Loma Plata, Philadelphia and Neuland.”
Then, Alliana held a meeting with the Council of Governors, made up of 15 Colorado Chartist departmental leaders. Only the governors of Misiones were absentRichard Ramirez (Missions) and Arturo Mendez (Upper Paraguay). The group of governors, led by the head of the Council, César Sosa, expressed their support for Alliana.
