PRISTINA – Montenegro had to act for the institutions in Kosovo to take steps against “Apetit Group”, after 102 tons of expired meat from Brazil was seized by the neighboring country, meat destined for Kosovo by this company.
The Food and Veterinary Agency announced that, following this news, they have increased the level of control measures against the economic operator “Apetit”, although the meat is being handled by the Customs of Montenegro.
“Upon any conclusion drawn, which confirms a danger to public health, which is related to food safety, the authority will without delay undertake the relevant measures, including the ban on circulation and the withdrawal from the market of each product that does not meet the legal criteria of food safety”, the announcement of the AUV states.
A quantity of 24 tons of expired frozen beef from Brazil, intended for the Kosovar company “Apetit ShPK”, was blocked by the Montenegrin authorities at the Port of Tivar this Thursday.
While, about a week ago, the Montenegrin authorities had stopped three more containers of beef, with a total weight of 77 tons. In total, about 102 tons of expired meat.
According to the Montenegrin newspaper “Vijesti”, the meat was headed towards Kosovo, while during the inspection at the port it was found that the period of use had expired.
The Customs Administration of Montenegro announced that on September 24, 2026, officials checked a container of frozen beef, which contained 1,321 packages, with a gross weight of 24,650 kilograms.
“During the inspection, it was established that the meat’s use-by date had expired on 14.05.2026”, the announcement of the Customs Administration states.
The company “Apetit ShPK” is one of the well-known companies in the market of production and processing of meat products in Kosovo, which is not the first time to have such a problem with expired meat that it presents as fresh.
