In the next period, it is necessary to start working on the ground and analyze the biological diversity, the regional characteristics, including the socio-economic aspects of the area in order to determine the natural values and the potential degree of protection of Kozhuf Mountain, it was concluded at the forum entitled “Dialogue for the future of Kozhuf”, which was held recently in the National Theater in Gevgelija, organized by the Center for Climate Change (CCP), reports the agency. Meta.
Within the framework of the forum, scientific and expert knowledge about the natural characteristics of Kozhuf, which represents one of the most valuable natural areas in the country, was presented.
“The mountain is distinguished by a diverse relief, significant geological and geomorphological phenomena, a developed hydrographic network and extremely rich biological diversity. Karst and glacial forms, paleovolcanic phenomena, numerous springs and watercourses, as well as valuable forest and mountain ecosystems are found on its territory. The wealth of plant and animal life is of particular importance. Kozhuf is home to several endemic and rare species, among which the Alshar violet (Viola allchariensis), Viola arsenica, Thymus alsarensis, Centaurea kavadarensis and other species with limited distribution and high scientific value”, reads the announcement of the Central Committee of the Republic of Moldova.
From there they remind that the natural values of Kozhuf are also recognized at the international level.
“The area is part of the Emerald Network in accordance with the Bern Convention, and it has also been identified as an important area for birds, plants and butterflies. These international recognitions confirm its exceptional role in the preservation of biological diversity and natural heritage. At the forum, it was emphasized that the protection of Kozhuf is not only a matter of nature conservation, but also a prerequisite for long-term sustainable management of natural resources, increasing resistance to climate change and creating new opportunities for local development. The importance of the active participation of the local community in all phases of the protection and future management of the area was emphasized. Kozhuf is a natural resource of exceptional national and international importance, which requires timely, systemic and long-term protection.
Eco activists and citizens from all over the country, in the organization of “Changemakers for all”, blocked the road last year, not allowing the construction of small hydroelectric plants on the Doshnica river.
“Barov Dol” and “Paprad” are the locations on the Doshnica River where the Government has approved the construction of two small hydropower plants on Kozuf Mountain. For this region, rich in endemic species and biological diversity, eco-activists from all over the country are becoming protective, pointing out that the construction will mean the destruction of biodiversity and the disappearance of unique animal and plant species.
Both locations are located not far from the springs of Doshnica, in untouched nature, i.e. in a large part of the area where no human foot has set foot.
