The working group for the drafting of the accession treaty of Montenegro to the EU will soon begin discussions on the so-called technical adjustments to the legal acquis of the Union (acquis) – the most demanding and time-consuming part of the process of drafting the accession treaty, it was announced. They said that this is a step that follows the official establishment of an ad hoc working group that recently received the green light for its formation.
We remind you that the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union Member States (COREPER) recently approved the formation of an ad hoc working group for the drafting of the Treaty on the Accession of Montenegro to the European Union.
On that occasion, the highest state officials in our country agreed that this is a historic moment and the final step towards the EU.
The Commission told our newspaper that they welcome the decision of the member states to start drafting the accession agreement, with the assessment that it represents a significant step on the way to EU membership.
– This acknowledges the progress of Montenegro and encourages the acceleration of reforms. It also opens the possibility to start drafting the contract, which will contain strong protective mechanisms in order to prevent regression in the area of the rule of law and fundamental values, according to the EC.
The Commission says that they are ready to submit all relevant draft texts to the Working Group as soon as its work begins.
Finally, they say that they are looking forward to the new phase of accession negotiations with Montenegro, with the message that “we are witnessing the moment when Montenegro’s place within the European Union begins to take its clear form.”
