With the draw between the two teams of Austria and Algeria, the only remaining chance for the students of Ghale Novi to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup was lost.
The national teams of Austria and Algeria reached a 3-3 draw in the most sensitive match of Group J of the 2026 World Cup. A dramatic result that sent both teams to the round of 16 and, on the other hand, closed the case for Iran’s participation in this competition.
Austria started the game better and took the lead in the 28th minute with the goal of Marko Arnatovic, but Algeria equalized in the 45th minute with the goal of Rafik Bulgali, so that the two teams went to the locker room with a score of 1-1.
In the second half, Austria took the lead again in the 55th minute with Marcel Sabitzer’s goal, but Riyad Mahrez scored Algeria’s second goal just five minutes later to equalize again.
While the game was coming to an end and a 2-2 draw guaranteed the advancement of both teams, the two teams opened each other’s goal again in the final minutes and the match ended with a 3-3 draw.
This result allowed Austria and Algeria to advance to the round of 16 by gaining the necessary points, and Iran, which was looking forward to the result of this match after the draw against Egypt, failed to reach the elimination stage.
In this period, the students of Qalanewi ended all three matches with a draw, but they needed one of the two Austrian or Algerian teams to advance. An event that never happened and the dream of promotion ended with a high-goal draw.
