Power restoration is now underway across sections of Dominica after an unexpected outage left customers without electricity earlier today.
In an update to the public, Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC) said electricity service has already begun returning to Roseau, with surrounding communities expected to be reconnected gradually as restoration efforts continue.
The company reported that the interruption was linked to a trip at the geothermal plant. However, following further investigations, DOMLEC clarified that the geothermal facility was not the original source of the outage.
“Kindly note that after further investigations, it was determined that the cause of the outage was not originated from the geothermal plant, but rather a fault on DOMLEC’s Lower Goodwill Feeder,” the company stated.
DOMLEC explained that while the feeder fault triggered the disruption, the geothermal plant subsequently tripped, causing the outage to spread across a wider area and affecting additional customers.
As crews work to restore service, the company said power is being returned incrementally, beginning with Roseau and extending to neighboring areas.
“We continue efforts to restore power to all affected customers and thank you for your patience and understanding,” the statement continued.
The utility provider also apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected interruption.
No estimate was immediately provided for when full restoration would be completed, but DOMLEC indicated that efforts remain ongoing to reconnect all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
