A dangerous thunderstorm is expected in Riga on Thursday. Riga residents are advised not to visit parks, playgrounds and cemeteries, the Riga city municipality reports.
According to meteorologists’ forecasts (the second highest level – orange – warning was announced) in Riga on Thursday, on June 11, dangerous thunderstorms and large hail are possible. In order to protect yourself and your loved ones, as well as not to interfere with the rescuers in eliminating the consequences of the storm, the Riga municipality calls on residents not to stay outside unless there is a special need and to refrain from visiting the capital’s parks, cemeteries, recreation areas and children’s playgrounds, as both trees and their branches can break.
According to meteorologists, in the period from 12.00 to At 16.00, a thunderstorm will develop in the central and eastern regions of Latvia with very heavy rains, strong wind gusts of 20-24 m/s and hail, in places there is a possibility of large hail. As the situation develops, the warning information may be clarified, and a cellular message is planned to be sent out in the threatened areas on Thursday morning.
The elimination of the consequences of the storm together with the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) will also be carried out by representatives of municipal services, clearing park paths and other areas of fallen trees, as well as repairing damage to public transport contact networks and performing other necessary actions, for example, monitoring water level fluctuations.
If weather conditions have caused damage that threatens people’s health and life, communication or public transport movement, citizens are invited to call the unified emergency telephone number 112.
If it is not clear to the residents who manages the area, where a tree or its branches are dangerous or has fallen, we invite you to report it to the municipality’s informational telephone number 1201 or to e-mail 1201@rigalv. Such situations can also be reported to the Riga Municipal Police by calling 110 or 112.
