THE meeting of President Lula with the North American donald trump it must follow a pre-determined script and be characterized as the sequence of a series of friendly contacts between the two representatives.
This is the opinion of diplomats who closely followed the dialogues between the countries’ teams that preceded the meeting between the two presidents, scheduled for Thursday (7).
One of the Itamaraty members interviewed by the column states that, as it is about Donald Trump, it is always necessary to be prepared for a last-minute surprise in the conversation.
The signals coming from the USA, however, are reassuring, according to the same diplomat.
Among the positive points is the fact that Trump, as soon as he resumed his schedule of international meetings, partially suspended because of the war against Iranhaving immediately put the meeting with Lula on the agenda. It will follow King Charles’ state visit to the White House.
The meeting was previously scheduled for Marchbut had been suspended because of the conflict in Middle East.
The prediction is that Lula, in the conversation, prioritize issues related to security and trade.
One of the priority themes in the relationship with the USA is the Section 301 investigation against Brazil. Through it, the US government punishes foreign commercial practices considered unfair or restrictive to the country’s interests.
If they conclude that this occurs with Brazil, the US can punish the country with tariffs and retaliation.
The priority, therefore, is for the Lula government to convince the Trump administration to close the investigations.
A high-level Brazilian team traveled to the USA to address the topics investigated. He showed members of the North American government, for example, that deforestation, one of the items investigated, has been falling in Brazil since 2022.
