Government says its new transportation law will put Belize on the road to safer, more reliable bus service. But Union Senator Glenfield Dennison says the destination remains unclear, especially when it comes to who will own, control and ultimately benefit from the proposed National Bus Company. The Senate has now passed the Public Transportation Investment Bill 2026, with Transport Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh calling it a major step toward transforming the industry. He also accused Dennison, the only social partner senator to vote against the bill, of standing on the wrong side of history. But Dennison is pushing back, arguing that government has not provided enough answers about the company at the center of its transportation overhaul.

“I don’t know that he has a crystal ball to be able to make that prediction, but I can tell you this. What we did yesterday for NBC is only the beginning of all the people of Belize will have to do to keep NBC afloat. I am convinced that the formulation of NBC is only being done in the name of the people of Belize, but it is being done for special interest groups to profit. I’ll leave it at that.”
Prior to the Senate debate, the Belize Bus Association urged senators to delay the vote on the Public Transportation Investment Bill 2026, calling for independent audits of the National Bus Company’s finances, assets and business plan, and seeking greater transparency on how the project would be funded and implemented.
