A 57-year-old driver suspected of causing the accident in which MP Łukasz Litewka was killed has been released from custody. This became possible after a bail payment — the District Court in Dąbrowa Górnicza ruled that the man could be freed upon posting bail of 40,000 złoty.
“On behalf of the suspect, bail has been paid and he has been released from custody today,” said Bartosz Kilian, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sosnowiec.
Łukasz Litewka, a 36-year-old MP from Sosnowiec, died last Thursday afternoon after being struck by a Mitsubishi Colt while cycling along Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The driver of the vehicle was detained following the accident. He was charged with causing a fatal traffic accident, an offense punishable by six months to eight years in prison. According to the prosecutor’s office, the man unintentionally violated traffic regulations and also unintentionally caused the MP’s death.
Following a motion by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Dąbrowa Górnicza, the local court decided on Saturday to place the suspect in custody for three months, but stipulated that he could be released if he posted bail of 40,000 złoty within 14 days.
After the required amount was paid, the detention was lifted, and the man is now under police supervision and subject to a ban on leaving the country.
The prosecutor’s office has appealed the district court’s decision — investigators argue that only pre-trial detention will properly secure the course of the investigation, which is still at an early stage. The appeal will be examined by the Regional Court in Sosnowiec; a hearing date has not yet been set.
