Landings: Despite a marked decline in volumes landed, coastal and artisanal fishing maintained a relatively stable level of value at the end of May. A dynamic driven by the good performance of certain ports and several species with high added value.
Landings from coastal and artisanal fishing show contrasting dynamics over the first five months of the year. Although volumes fell significantly, the value generated remained relatively at the same level observed a year earlier. 4.39 billion dirhams, this is the overall amount generated by the coastal and artisanal fishing sector for the first five months of the year. This figure corresponds to a volume of landings of around 264,418 tonnes marketed at the end of May. Referring to indicators published by the ONP, landings are down 18% in weight and 1% in value. The downward trend is confirmed both on the Atlantic coast and in Mediterranean ports. In detail, Atlantic ports continue to capture the majority of landings.
The volume marketed in this scope was around 257,078 tonnes (-18%) thus generating a value of 4.09 billion dirhams, an increase of 1%. Among the Atlantic ports having posted a positive performance in the first five months of the year, we cite the port of Casablanca. Artisanal and coastal fishing products generated 104.73 MDH at the port of Casablanca, an improvement of 27%, or 10,734 tonnes marketed (+74%). We also note a positive development in landings at Taghazout where landings increased by 21% in volume and 16% in value. The same goes for Tarfaya (11% by weight and 12% by amount). At the same time, Mediterranean ports saw their landings increase by 4% in weight, reaching 7,340 tonnes. This volume was sold at 304.73 MDH, a value down 13% compared to the same period last year. Double-digit growth was recorded in many ports in this area.
Let us cite in this sense the port of Dalia where the weight and value of landings increased by 17% and 21% respectively. Same observation at the port of Inouaren where the volume improved by 39% while the value recovered by 31%. At the same time, landings at the port of Ksar Sghir reached a peak of 43% when their value consolidated by 45%. There is also an increase of 16% in the value of products marketed at the port of Raskabdana, 18% at the port of Sidihsaine and 1% at the port of Tangier. By species, landings of shellfish, white and pelagic fish fell respectively by 37%, to 30 tonnes, by 36%, to 33,115 tonnes and by 18% to 195,241 tonnes. Conversely, landings of algae, cephalopods and crustaceans increased by 11%, to 2,057 tonnes, by 10%, to 30,837 tonnes and by 1%, to 3,137 tonnes.
