Announcement in the budget that ‘Chitranagaram’ (J.C. Daniel International Film City) will be established in Kochi with the aim of developing the film sector. The Rs 100 crore mega project aims at a radical transformation of the film industry, including giving industrial status to film production, setting up a permanent venue for the International Film Festival (IFFK), forming a strong anti-piracy cell and creating an enabling environment to attract national and international film production.
Currently Thiruvananthapuram is the venue of International Film Festival. Following the budget announcement that a permanent venue would be set up, there was a campaign that it would be in Kochi. However, Minister PC Vishnunath stated that it has not been decided to make the permanent venue in Kochi and will remain in Thiruvananthapuram.
Acknowledgment of cinema as an industry has been a demand of filmmakers for years. With official industrial status, bank loans become easier. Through the single window system, various government permissions for filming can be obtained quickly without getting bogged down in red tape.
With the ease of insurance coverage and subsidies, the financial security of producers will increase. With the addition of anti-piracy cell, it will be possible to stop the counterfeiting mafia.
