Caroni East Member of Parliament Dr Rishard Seecharan has commended the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) for its swift action in dismantling a home invasion gang that had been targeting residents in the constituency.
Speaking with Guardian Media, Seecharan described the police response as “quick and decisive,” noting that the operation brought relief to communities that had been living in fear due to a series of home invasions. He also praised Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, members of the TTPS and the Defence Force for their coordinated efforts.
Despite the breakthrough, concerns remain among residents about ongoing criminal activity. Seecharan said that during a virtual meeting on Monday night between the TTPS and constituents, several issues were raised, particularly the need for increased police visibility.
Residents called for more frequent mobile and foot patrols, along with the installation of additional CCTV cameras across key areas in Caroni East. There were also appeals for the reintroduction of strategic roadblocks aimed at intercepting illegal weapons and drugs.
Another issue raised during the discussions was the reported rise in undocumented migrants within the constituency. Seecharan acknowledged the concern, stating that there has been an increase in rental activity involving individuals whose backgrounds are not easily verified.
He urged property owners to exercise caution when renting, noting that community awareness is critical in maintaining public safety. The matter, he said, was raised directly with police officials during the meeting.
In response to growing public concern, Seecharan announced plans for a town hall meeting later this month at Raghunanan Road Primary School. The meeting will bring together residents, police representatives and other stakeholders to discuss crime issues and identify practical solutions.
He also commended Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for ongoing legislative efforts to combat serious crime, including proposed measures aimed at strengthening laws related to home invasions.
“The upcoming engagement will provide a platform for residents to voice their concerns directly to law enforcement officials while helping authorities refine strategies to prevent further criminal activity in the area.”
