The former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years for attempted coup d’état, underwent a surgical procedure on his shoulder “without complications” and remains under medical observation in an intensive care room, medical sources reported.
Bolsonaro was admitted on Friday morning to the DF Star hospital in Brasilia, where he underwent “an arthroscopic repair of the right rotator cuff,” according to the medical report released, in which the doctors indicated that the operation passed without complications.
“The patient is currently in an intensive care unit for pain control and clinical observation,” the bulletin adds.
The surgery was authorized on Thursday by the Supreme Court judge and instructor of Bolsonaro’s case, Alexandre de Moraes, after a favorable recommendation from the Attorney General’s Office, based on medical reports that indicated the need for the procedure to treat shoulder injuries.
The procedure repaired the rotator cuff and associated injuries in the right shoulder of the far-right leader, resulting from a fall suffered in January, when the former president was detained in the facilities of the Superintendency of the Federal Police in Brasilia.
The former head of state (2019-2022) was sentenced last November to 27 years and three months in prison for “leading” a coup plot to remain in power after losing the 2022 elections to the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The far-right leader was held first in a special room at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia and then in a prison complex in the same city.
Since last March 27, he has been under house arrest for a period of 90 days given his delicate state of health and, at the end of that period, Judge De Moraes will evaluate whether Bolsonaro will continue under house arrest or return to jail.
The temporary change of regime, authorized by the Supreme Court, followed a serious case of bilateral bacterial pneumonia suffered by Bolsonaro, caused by an episode of bronchoaspiration, and which forced his hospitalization.
The former president has been suffering from various medical problems that he and those around him attribute to the stab wound he suffered in the abdomen during the 2018 election campaign and which has forced him to undergo surgery several times.
