Bishkek (AKIpress) – Bishkek joined the Central Asian Coalition for Sustainable Cities. This was announced on October 23 at the capital’s mayor’s office.
The decision was announced as part of the Second Regional Dialogue on Sustainable Cities, which took place on October 19–20 in Tashkent.
Along with Bishkek, Manas (Kyrgyzstan), Isfara (Tajikistan), Fergana and Kokand (Uzbekistan) joined the coalition. The founding cities of the association include Petropavlovsk, Osh, Dushanbe, Ashgabat and Namangan.
Head of the Development Policy Department of the Bishkek City Hall Davletbek Tugolbaev said that the capital supports the creation of the Coalition of Cities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia, initiated by the UN Development Program and the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction.
As the mayor’s office explained, the coalition will allow cities to exchange experiences and jointly seek practical solutions to improve preparedness for floods, earthquakes and other hazardous events.
Participation in the association should also help cities take climate risks into account in long-term development planning.
