Belize has assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Ad Hoc Group responsible for implementing the Central American Integration System Regional Digital Strategy (ERDI), placing the country at the forefront of efforts to shape the region’s digital future for the next six months.
The Ministry of E-Governance announced that Belize officially took over the July to December 2026 presidency from the Dominican Republic, with Acting Director John Robateau leading the regional body.
The appointment gives Belize a key role in coordinating digital transformation initiatives across Central America and the Dominican Republic, with a focus on strengthening cybersecurity, expanding digital services and advancing the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
“Digital transformation is the tool with which Central America and the Dominican Republic face their challenges in security, governance, and economics,” Robateau said. He added that Belize views technology not simply as a technical issue but as public policy focused on improving people’s lives and expanding opportunities.
During its six-month presidency, Belize will prioritise three major regional goals: enhancing cybersecurity to better protect critical infrastructure and digital users; improving digital interoperability by promoting cross-border recognition of electronic signatures to simplify trade and government services; and encouraging the development of ethical, locally driven artificial intelligence solutions designed to address regional needs.
The government said it will work alongside SICA member states, development partners, the private sector and civil society to strengthen regional cooperation and promote greater digital integration and economic competitiveness across the region.
