Belize’s first-ever Super Nationals has wrapped up after two weeks of competition, and organisers are calling the event a great victory that goes past awarding medals.
Nearly 800 primary and secondary school athletes from across all six districts faced off in several different sports, including football, volleyball, basketball and athletics.
Minister of Tourism, Youth and Sports Anthony Mahler described the inaugural games as the start of a long-term vision to identify and develop Belize’s best young athletes. He said, “This is a vision that Minister Devin Daly and I have… that we want to put the best people in to give them the best opportunity to do their best.”
“Sports teaches you life skills that you need in your daily life… Each of you in here has an opportunity to use sports as a beacon to educate yourself,” he added.
Mahler pledged greater investment to expand the competition in 2027 and revealed plans to attract international scouts.
“We’ll see you next year. And the goal is to start bringing in scouts to look at you, to take you outside of Belize so that you can get even better training and you can go as far as you want to go,” Mahler said.
The National Sports Council also plans to add more sporting disciplines next year.
