SIBU (June 12): The ability to balance sports, academics and co-curricular activities will shape students into becoming responsible and successful individuals, said Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
The Bawang Assan assemblyman described a well-rounded student as one who excels academically, is active in sports, and possesses good character and moral values.
“While excellence in sports is important, academic achievement must be given equal attention. Education remains the key to a brighter future.
“Therefore, students should strive to achieve a balance between sports, studies and co-curricular activities,” he said in a speech read by Councillor Sean Wong at SMK Bawang Assan’s sports meet here yesterday.
On the sports meet, Soon Koh said it serves a greater purpose than merely competing for medals and trophies.
“Through sports, students learn about discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership and self-confidence.
“All these are important values that will help shape students into responsible and successful individuals in the future,” he said.
He expressed hope that all SMK Bawang Assan students would continue to practise good behaviour, uphold high moral values, and maintain strong spiritual foundations.
“Knowledge without good values will not bring true success in life.”
He also encouraged students to aim towards pursuing higher education, noting that the Sarawak government places significant emphasis on educational and human capital development.
“With the availability of free higher education opportunities, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, every student should make higher education their primary goal.
“With discipline, determination and hard work, success can certainly be achieved,” he said.
