Gratitude for the warm welcome
received during the recent apostolic trip to Spain
Satisfaction for the agreement reached between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, but also pain for the continuing conflict in Ukraine. Leo XIV expressed them at the end of this morning’s general audience in St. Peter’s Square.
Seeing in the agreement, which will be signed by Tehran and Washington on Friday, an “encouraging result of patient work of dialogue and negotiation”, the Pope hoped that it “can contribute to strengthening mutual trust, security and stability in the Middle East, promoting paths of dialogue and cooperation between peoples”.
At the same time, turning his gaze to Ukraine, where the conflict that exploded in February 2022 continues to worsen, the Bishop of Rome renewed the appeal to put an end to the war, inviting us to pray so that hatred will die down and “a just and lasting peace” may be possible.
