“I have talked to people and most of them are very happy with this. Most of them are seeing the problem with the mileage fee and encountering problems related to it,” says Maria Csizmás, responsible for successful of the signature list against the mileage fee.
“I also heard from people who thought it was all right because they are afraid that petrol and diesel prices are going up. Some people who are driving jeeps, especially older jeeps, think the mileage fee is awesome, but now it has started to rise again and is almost the same as before.”
If gas prices are almost the same as they were, what is this mileage charge other than an additional tax?” Maria asks.
Willing to find people with him
The petition officially ends on the last day of the month, Thursday, but the implementation of the fee has been criticized, among other things, due to miscalculations and fines.
Maria says the implementation is not good and the thinking behind the mileage fee does not work.
She has been in contact with many people, including Runólf Ólafsson, executive director of the Association of Icelandic Automobile Owners.
“He is a very good man and a great professional. He agrees with me in everything we talked about that the implementation is not correct. It is not possible to measure this correctly, technically. They will still apply for a reduction in value added tax and are focusing on it,” says Maria, referring to the association.
She says she is going to find people with her to go to a meeting with Daða Más Kristófersson, Minister of Finance and Economy.
“It is up to us to make an appointment with him and deliver the signatures. If nothing comes against over 40,000 signatures, we must look at what kind of legal framework is in place to continue,” says the Hungarian crusader against the Icelandic mileage fee.
Maria would especially like to thank the journalists and editorial staff of Morgunblaðinn for taking up the gauntlet for this issue and for herself.
