AOSIS calls for energy transition ahead of climate dialogue

The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) has called on countries to increase action on energy policy ahead of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue.

In a statement issued in New York, AOSIS said ministers will meet for the first climate ministerial since COP30. The group said countries must move to secure energy supply through renewable sources.

AOSIS said the situation in the Middle East shows risks linked to reliance on fossil fuels. The group said dependence on these resources affects economies and communities, including small island developing states.

The statement said renewable energy capacity increased and accounted for a share of global power capacity at the end of last year. AOSIS said solutions are available and can support energy supply and reduce costs.

AOSIS said failure by countries to meet commitments and implement plans will affect global stability. The group called on developed countries to take action at the dialogue and support a shift from fossil fuels.

AOSIS said this shift should be based on sustainability and equity. The group said countries must raise ambition and carry out measures to address climate change.

The Petersberg Climate Dialogue will bring together ministers to discuss climate policy and implementation. AOSIS said the meeting is an opportunity for countries to outline steps on energy and climate action.
