Toronto – (dpa):
It has become certain that Alphonso Davis, Bayern Munich’s German defender, will be absent from Canada’s national team in its first match in the 2026 World Cup against Bosnia and Herzegovina, today, Friday.
American Jesse Marsh, head coach of the Canadian national team, confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that the player has not yet recovered from his thigh injury.
Davis suffered a muscle tear in Bayern Munich’s match against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final last month, and although the 25-year-old player participated in light training, he is not yet ready to play in the World Cup.
Marsh said: “He is recovering very well, and we are ready to raise the level of his training.”
He added: “We very much hope that he will achieve progress in the coming days and next week, such that he will be able to participate.”
The Canadian national team, which is in the second group of the tournament, will face Qatar and Switzerland on June 19 and 24 in the remaining matches in the group stage.
Before the match, Marsh said about his players: “They feel proud to wear that shirt and represent the country and hear the national anthem. They want to show the country how proud they are.”
