Algeria reaffirms its firm position on Sahrawi cause

This came during his meeting with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is currently on a visit to the region.

According to a statement issued by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting provided an opportunity to review efforts aimed at advancing the negotiation process on the Western Sahara issue in order to reach a political solution acceptable to both parties to the conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and guaranteeing the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination.

Minister Ahmed Attaf reiterated Algeria’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and his Personal Envoy. He underscored the importance of engaging in negotiations without preconditions and of creating the appropriate conditions for direct talks between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front to lead to a just, lasting, and definitive solution to the Western Sahara question.

The Algerian minister also stressed the pivotal role played by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in maintaining stability in the region. He further reaffirmed Algeria’s consistent position calling for respect for international legitimacy and United Nations resolutions concerning Western Sahara and for treating the issue as a decolonization matter.
