Algeria, June 15, 2026 (SPS) – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, affirmed his country’s firm position towards the Sahrawi issue as an issue of decolonization.
This came as he received the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, who was leading a visit to the region.
According to the statement of the Algerian Foreign Ministry – this meeting allowed for a review of the efforts aimed at advancing the negotiating process on the issue of Western Sahara with the aim of finding a political solution acceptable to both parties to the conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and guaranteeing the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination.
Minister Ahmed Attaf renewed Algeria’s support for the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres, and his personal envoy, noting the importance of engaging in negotiations without preconditions and the necessity of providing optimal conditions in order for direct negotiations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front to lead to the crystallization of a just, lasting and final solution to the Western Sahara issue.

The Algerian Minister of State also stressed the pivotal role played by the United Nations Mission to Organize the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in stabilizing the region, stressing Algeria’s firm position calling for respecting the resolutions of international legitimacy related to the issue of Western Sahara and dealing with it as an issue of decolonization.
