During meetings held with the Ambassador in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean, Mohamed Zroug, the leaders of the parties and institutions stressed the importance of Costa Rica continuing, in line with its longstanding historical tradition of respect for international law, peace, and the defense of peoples’ right to self-determination, to play a positive and constructive role in completing the decolonization process in Western Sahara.

They also expressed their full readiness to cooperate with Sahrawi institutions and civil society organizations in raising awareness about the reality of the Sahrawi people’s struggle and anti-colonial resistance, as well as its legitimate aspirations for sovereignty and independence.

In the same context, they emphasized the need to put an end to the systematic violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, as well as the ongoing plundering and exploitation of natural resources.

The Costa Rican representatives also highlighted the importance of expanding awareness of the Sahrawi cause in other countries of Central America and strengthening networks of solidarity and cooperation among peoples.

At the conclusion of the meetings, the participants unanimously stressed the responsibility of the United Nations regarding the continued existence of an unresolved colonial situation in Western Sahara and the need to mobilize the commitment of states and governments to contribute to completing the decolonization process in the territory.

They further reaffirmed that the international community must ensure the necessary conditions enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to determine their future freely, democratically, and with full transparency, in accordance with the relevant principles and resolutions of the United Nations.
