The official veterinarians of the Food and Veterinary Agency (AFV) prevented the import of 23,685 kilograms of frozen chicken meat originating from Brazil, due to non-compliance with the measures to protect against the introduction of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) into the country.
The Agency informs that the shipment was rejected because the meat was produced in January 2025, which is contrary to the current ban on the import of live animals, products and by-products of animal origin from certain areas.
According to the adopted decision, the import of consignments obtained from animals that were slaughtered, loaded or certified before August 1, 2025 is prohibited.
AHV reminds that this is not the first such case. In December last year, official veterinarians at the same border crossing returned to Brazil a shipment of more than 26 tons of frozen chicken drumsticks, also due to non-compliance with measures related to preventing the spread of bird flu.
– As a responsible institution for food safety, we appeal to importers to respect the legal and by-law regulations, as well as standards related to food safety, because the health of citizens is our top priority – the Agency announced.
Controls on the import of animal products remain strengthened in order to prevent the introduction of infectious diseases and ensure a high level of food safety in the domestic market.
