The Prime Minister Christian Mickoski stated that within the European Union discussions are underway to overcome the congestion caused by the application of the EES system for entry into the member countries.
He pointed out that the Government is closely monitoring the situation, especially after the increased crowds at the border crossings, but warned that if the problem is not resolved in time, it could create additional difficulties during the summer season.
As an alternative, Mickoski suggested that citizens use the country’s tourism potential, stressing that Macedonia has numerous attractive vacation destinations.
– I would not comment too much on that behavior. We have certain discussions within the EU on how to overcome that. But if summer vacations are a problem, we have beautiful lakes, mountains, we have beautiful places in Macedonia. I call on the Macedonian citizens to spend their annual summer vacations on the Macedonian mountains and lakes, in the Macedonian villages, because we have a beautiful country and we should protect it ourselves because we don’t have a second spare homeland – said Mickoski.
The issue with the EES system became especially topical after its full application began on April 1, after which long queues formed at the Macedonian-Greek border during the holidays, where the wait reached several hours.
