A call to be careful and observe restrictions when burning bonfires
Before this year’s bonfires, the Administration for Protection and Rescue warns event organizers and all others who will light bonfires in a natural environment during the May Day holidays that they must do so carefully and respect the restrictions and prohibitions from the regulation on fire protection in the natural environment.
As they point out, the area around the fire pit must be cleared of all combustible materials, at least one meter from the edge of the bonfire fire pit, and if a fire guard is not provided, the fire pit must also be surrounded by non-combustible materials such as earth, sand, stones or bricks. The bonfire must be under the supervision of an adult at all times.
Bonfires are not allowed to be lit in windy weather, but if they are already burning, they must be stopped. It is forbidden to use dangerous, inflammable and explosive substances when burning, and after burning, the fire and embers must be extinguished. They also recommend covering the fireplace with non-combustible material.
At all public events with bonfires, a fire watch is mandatory, but it can only be performed by the locally competent fire brigades, announced the Administration for Protection and Rescue. The burning of bonfires is prohibited when there is a declared high or very high fire risk to the natural environment.
In the event of a fire, it is necessary to try to extinguish it as soon as possible, but if this is not possible, it is necessary to call the regional information center on the number 112, which will send the fire brigade to the place of the fire.
Before lighting bonfires, the organizers must also find out whether any additional restrictions, requirements and prohibitions apply at the specific location. These are determined by regulations on forests, and in protected areas by regulations in the field of nature conservation. Restrictions can also be set by local communities, they added.
