In the arrest of the man who had been recorded walking away from beehives in Alsos Veikou shortly after the fire at noon yesterday, Thursday, the officers of the Fire Department’s Department for Combating Arson Crimes proceeded.
According to information, the 45-year-old was arrested last night, as part of the spontaneous procedure.
It was attributed to him and an administrative fine of 3,557.81 euros, while today he will be brought before the prosecutor.
As it has emerged from the data collected, the fire started from smoking by the bees. The Fire Department is examining testimonies according to which there were at least two people working at the scene before the fire started. In fact, one of them, who is considered the owner of the bees, can be seen in videos and photos wearing a white beekeeper’s uniform.
Residents of the area reported seeing flames and thick black smoke at the junction of Botsari and Metaxa streets shortly after 12 noon. The beekeepers left the scene when they saw that the fire had reached proportions. The Fire Department announced at 1:30 p.m. that the fire was partially under control. It is not clear who owns the area where the beehives were placed in Alsos Veikou. It is noted that 47 firefighters with two groups of infantry units of the 1st EMODE and ten vehicles were mobilized to extinguish the fire, while two helicopters attempted to extinguish the fire. Volunteers also participated in the extinguishing operation.
