Herbicide treatment conducted at four Pyu pagodas in Bagan

According to the Bagan Branch of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum and the Bagan Heritage Trust, herbicide treatment was carried out on trees growing atop the four Pyu pagodas located north of Thiripyitsaya Ward to ensure their long-term structural integrity.

On 11 April, as part of continuous efforts to preserve the ancient, historical, and cultural value of Bagan’s monuments, officials from these organizations applied chemical herbicides to eliminate Banyan trees, Capparis flavicans, and Capparis zeylanica growing on the four Pyu pagodas north of Thiripyitsaya Ward.

To support these efforts, U Zaw Weik and Daw Htay Win family (Zaw Travel & Tours) donated 500,000 Kyats to the Bagan Heritage Trust on 11 April.

The Bagan Heritage Trust previously conducted similar operations from 26 July to 11 August, 2025, during which they successfully treated over 290 plants—including the above-mentioned trees—growing on monuments such as the Taung Bi Pitaka Taik (1969), the northern wall of Sulamani, Temple No 1152, Tabatkyay Pagoda, Lawka Okshaung Gu Temple, Temple No 1468, and Temple No 1469. Officials also confirmed that these preservation efforts for other pagodas are still ongoing.
