SIBU (April 14): The Christian community in Sibu came together to celebrate during the Easter Joy Service 2026 hosted by St Mary’s of the Divine Mercy Church.
The two-hour programme, held on Sunday evening, was organised by the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) Sibu and brought together about 100 worshippers from the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference Methodist, Sarawak Iban Annual Conference Methodist, and Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM).
St Mary’s of the Divine Mercy Church rector Reverend Monsignor Michael Lee, also ACS Sibu deputy chairman, delivered the opening prayer while ACS Sibu chairman Pastor Thomas Any, also BEM Sibu superintendent, gave the welcoming address.
Representatives from other denominations contributed readings and intercessory prayers in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Iban.
Bishop Joseph Hii of the Sibu Diocese delivered the Easter message, touching on Christ’s resurrection as a message of peace, forgiveness and reconciliation.
“The disciples, despite fear and guilt, were greeted by Jesus with peace—signifying God’s forgiveness and unconditional love.
“Believers are called to live as people of forgiveness, and to continue Christ’s mission through the Holy Spirit by bringing peace and reconciliation to others,” he said, adding that Christians are called to forgive themselves and others and to live out love as the foundation of unity.
