What began as an enriching learning experience outside national borders ended in a profound tragedy for the university community of Honduras.
This Friday, April 10, the death was confirmed by drowning of two students from the Catholic University of Honduras (Unicah) on Las Flores beach in La Libertad, El Salvador, while a third young man remains missing.
The group of students, belonging to the Santa Rosa de Lima Campus (Santa Rosa de Copán), was in Salvadoran territory on an academic tour. According to the official statement from the institution, the accident occurred after having concluded their scheduled activities, when the young people were taking advantage of a moment of recreation.
The fatal victims have been identified as: Fredy Arnulfo Valle Aguilar and Alexis Roberto Romero Lemus. Both were students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Their bodies have already been recovered by local rescue authorities.
A third student, identified as Olvin Alexander Mejía Solís, has not yet been located. Rescue teams in El Salvador continue searching in the area of the incident, while the university community remains vigil and praying in the hope of finding him.
Through a heartfelt statement, Unicah expressed its pain at the event that has left the institution in mourning. “As an institution we are accompanying their families and faculty colleagues with closeness, solidarity and with all the necessary human and institutional support,” the document quotes.
The news has generated a wave of solidarity on social networks, where colleagues and teachers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering have expressed their regret and remembered the young people as dedicated students with a promising future.
Diario La Prensa had access to a video in which the group of young people is seen visiting the modern market that Nayib Bukele recently inaugurated. It was reported that there were 41 young Hondurans who were part of the student delegation.
