SIBU (May 8): Commercial crime cases here have risen this year despite an overall decline in crime index cases, said Sibu police chief ACP Azari Miskon.
He said 247 commercial crime cases involving losses amounting to RM4.48 million had been recorded this year, compared to 214 cases with losses totalling RM4.83 million in 2025.
“Current issues such as crime, drug abuse, and the increasing trend of cybercrime are becoming more worrying and require serious attention from all parties,” he said during the Sibu District Police Headquarters monthly assembly.
Despite the increase in commercial crime cases, Azari said overall crime index statistics showed an encouraging downward trend.
“For the period from Jan 1 to April 30 last year, a total of 169 crime index cases were recorded, with 111 cases solved, representing a 65.68 per cent solving rate.
“For the same period this year, only 139 cases were recorded, showing a reduction of 30 cases compared to last year,” he said.
He noted that the case solving rate this year stood at 52.52 per cent after 73 cases were successfully solved.
On road safety, Azari said road accident statistics this year showed a decrease of 168 cases or 2.32 per cent compared to the previous year.
He added that police had issued 4,229 summonses, while narcotics-related arrests also recorded an increase.
“For April 2026 alone, 610 arrests were made by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, reflecting an increase of 14.43 per cent compared to last year,” he said.
He stressed that enforcement and preventive measures must continue to be strengthened proactively and strategically, while community policing efforts should also be enhanced to maintain public trust.
“Public confidence is our greatest asset in ensuring the success of the police force as a security organisation,” he said.
At the same time, Azari reminded all officers and personnel to uphold integrity, discipline, and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining the welfare, mental health, and physical fitness of police personnel, including monitoring Body Mass Index (BMI) levels to ensure officers remain fit and capable of performing their responsibilities effectively.
During the ceremony, Azari also presented rank insignias to seven junior police officers, while another 10 personnel received certificates of appreciation in recognition of their service and contributions.
