Libya has joined a World Bank-backed initiative aimed at ending routine gas flaring by 2030, the oil ministry has said.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the World Bank headquarters in Washington.
The ministry said the step is intended to reduce waste and improve the use of associated gas. It added that Libya flared an estimated 6.3 billion cubic metres of gas in 2024, representing losses of around $650m.
Several senior officials attended the signing, including the oil and gas, transport, and economy ministers.
The ministry said discussions also focused on developing a national plan to cut flaring through technical support, capacity building and policy advice.
The move is expected to strengthen the role of the energy sector in supporting Libya’s economy while improving environmental sustainability.
